Disneyland’s “live mermaids”, were part of the Submarine Voyage from 1965-1967. They would hold auditions at the Disneyland Hotel in Spring, as this was only a Summer job. The girls made $1.65 an hour to swim the lagoon and wave at passing guests from the rocks.
Urban legend claims that the live mermaid feature was discontinued because a girl drowned. Not true. Only one accidental death of a Cast Member has taken place at Disneyland. It happened in the attraction “America Sings”. A young lady was crushed to death by the rotating stage. Gruesome story! Google it. Anyway, the truth is high doses of chlorine had taken it’s toll on the hair and skin of the “mermaids”. In addition to the chlorine damage, girls had been complaining about the fumes from the submarines’ diesel exhaust.
